Location & Activities

Sonogno is the last village of the Verzasca Valley; The hamlet is plenty of stone houses and typical roads; there is a museum too (Ex Genardini house). Also of note are the ancient village oven, which is still used sometimes and the wool center (by the Pro Verzasca organization, which is responsible for dyeing, carding and spinning the wool). The finished products are sold in the town’s craft shops. The town’s church boasts paintings by Cherubino Patà, a native of Sonogno and a pupil of the great Courbet. Another point of interest is the façade of a house in the village that depicts an 18th century peasant version of Michelangelo’s Last Judgment. (Ticino Tourism)

The source of the Verzasca River is on the peaks above Sonogno from where it follows the namesake valley, down to the Corippo fork and flows into the artificial lake. The clear emerald-colored waters and the pristine nature that surrounds it make it an appreciated destination in summer. During the hot season the spots where the water is calmer transform into inviting outdoor pools and the shores, especially in the area around Lavertezzo, fill-up with swimmers. A real jewel found in the midst of the natural wilderness of this valley and a paradise for underwater diving lovers. Caution and safety are crucial! (Ticinotopten.ch)
